Small Zuni, Polychrome, Water Jar, Circa 1910
Zuni Pueblo
Crica 1910 | Clay | Item 2240
This is a sweet Zuni jar. It is indented on the bottom, so this is either a tourist trade piece or it was made to carry water, perhaps by a young girl. It’s polychrome in red and brown. The overall designs are rows of repeating shapes and most all of these shapes are stepped bars. The designs around the neck have stepped designs alternating in color and almost interlocking as one is stacked above the other. This neck band is separated with a double, bold line going all around with a break. The main design fills the body below the neck with the same stepped elements, except here they are standing up but also in an interlocking pose as if they might fit together. The brown version of these designs has a round void in the center with a brown dot. Below the body design is a single framing line at the top of the base, which is a deep red slip color. There is a number painted on the base as 1 – 1. This is likely an inventory number for the previous collector.
