Tesuque Lidded Jar, Late 19th Century
Tesuque Pueblo
Circa 1880 | Item 2183
It’s rare to find an old jar like this that still has its lid in tact. This smaller Tesuque jar has two, complex, repeating designs on the body. They are generally the same with the exception of one of them having a tree coming out of its center. The upper 2/3rds of the jar has the classic cream slip with black designs over it. At the bottom of this is a narrow, deep red band about 1/2″ wide. This separates the upper slipped portion from the lower un-slipped but stone polished portion. The natural color of the clay here is a soft tan.
