This beautiful band is a bit rough in condition, but it sure is an unusual beaded item. I suspect it was worn around the neck like a choker necklace. Larry Frank collected this in New Mexico in the field from a Hispanic family.
A very well worn, religious, brass medallion with designs on both sides hangs from two strands of clear, glass beads. The medallion has writing on it that is too worn to read. This was collected in the field by Larry Frank of Arroyo Hondo and comes from an early New Mexican family.
This 19th century religious wrist bracelet has a band of large black beads divided by even larger white beads. On its end hangs a beaded heart and at the end of the heart hangs a small religious medallion with decorations on each side. One side reads: N.D. DC Lourdes P.P. N. and the other side […]
This sweet beaded heart on a beaded wrist band was made in New Mexico during the last half of the 19th century. The heart is beaded on both sides and is attached to a beaded wrist band consisting of 4 strands twisted into a spiral. It is most likely a religious item worn by a […]
This beautiful beaded heart on a necklace would have been made during the last half of the 19th century somewhere in what is now New Mexico. It would most likely be a religious piece associated with the Catholic Church at the time. The small size of the necklace portion says this was likely for a […]
This large, beaded Cheyenne umbilical fetish is likely a turtle, but that correct answer can only come from its maker. The earlier, glass beads (whie, dark blue, light blue, greasy yellow, red with white hears and pink) are lazy stitched onto a buffalo hide. The pouch is stuffed with sweetgrass and buffalo hair. There is […]
This is a wonderful awl case that shows good age and is quite early. It is a highly decorated case. The hide is buffalo, and there are 4 layers each defined by a ring of tin cones. Beads line the top edge. There is a brass button attached to the top on one side. The […]
This is a very appealing pair of Sioux moccasins. The simplicity of the design and the limited color palette make for an overall handsome look. There are only three bead colors: deep blue, white, and red with white hearts. The pair are on buffalo hide. There is a forked tongue that is beaded as well. […]
These types of layered earrings might have come from the Southern to the Northern Plains and even possibly the NW interior. This is a style used by many tribes. Comanche is a likely possibility since the original collector purchased these sometime in the 1960 – 1970 in Oklahoma with mostly other Comanche material. It’s this […]
The colors of the glass beads and the arrangement suggests that this may be Arapahoe. The use of black beads adjacent to the pink and blue has the feel for Arapahoe. Five rows of greasy yellow beads are at the center of the mountain design. This is well executed onto a thick hide, possibly elk. […]
