19th C. Navajo Banded Blanket with Indigo

Item: 875

Origin: Navajo
Date: Circa 1880

Media: Wool

Dimensions: 64″ x 42″

Description: This banded blanket is incredible for its background abrash pattern found in the carded grey yarns.   The movement on this background is constant and vaired, with each grey area having a life of its own.  This background is all the more striking bordered by complex bands of red, yellow and deep indigo blue all created with a stepped pattern.  The wool is soft and supple.

Restoration: Older restoration is visible in areas, particularly in the second to the last orange banded area. This older restoration has blended in with the piece and gives it some of its charm.  I assume that the selvage cords were replaced around the same time these other mends occurred.
