A Stellar Santo Domingo Cooking Large Bowl circa 1890

Description:  This is a wonderful large bowl. It’s to big to be a stew bowl, and likely too small to be a dough bowl.  My thinking is that it’s a cooking bowl.  The geometric designs on it are stellar.  They are crisp, tight, fine and consistent.  I have rarely seen a bowl so beautifully created.  The design is made up of joining figures.  Each figure has two diamonds meeting in the middle point to point.   From these two diamonds radiates two arms reaching up to the rim and two legs reaching down to the base. There are 13 of these figures with a break in the design created by two vertical thin bands that meet up with the upper and lower double bands.  The patina is warm and rich, showing much use and wear over the years.

Provenance: From a private collection in Indianapolis, IN,

Condition: Minor restoration on a couple rim chips. Cracks have been stabilized.  One crack on the side and one crack at the base that branches off into two.
