A 19th c. Hopi, Large, Stew Bowl

Item: 1715

Origin: Hopi
Date: Last quarter 19th century
Media: Clay
Dimensions: 14.5″ diameter, 5″ tall

Description:  This is a wonderful and early, monumental bowl.   The exterior has no painted designs, but has an amazing surface with fire clouds and variations to the warm, honey tones.  The interior shows much use at the base, where the slip is like crackle ware as found on the Polacca pottery.  The rim is painted red. Just inside the flaring rim is a intricately designed band 4″ wide.  This band is comprised of a complex design of angular parts that repeats seven times around the bowl. Most notable in this design is an arm that bends at the elbow and then at the wrist much like a human arm.  At the wrist the bend turns into two short lines looking like fingers on a hand.   The paint colors are deep brown and rust red.

Condition: Condition is original with evidence of one crack that has been worked on and stabilized.  It goes from the rim down about 3.5″ where it forks into two segments that go about 1″ -2″ in length.  It’s hard to see the crack, but visibler if you work to find it. There are two, early chips along the rim.
