An Early Navajo Double Saddle Blanket

Item: 1373

Origin: Navajo
Date: Circa 1900

Media: Hand spun wool

Dimensions: 48″ by 33″

Description: This double saddle blanket is at the top of its class.  The wool is not heavily spun and is very soft feeling like the early, churro wool.  The open, cream white center is framed by a carded or naturally grown light brown variegated yarn.  The border enclosing this is a more complex array of triangular spirals at the ends and the sides a zig-zag meeting of natural cream white and brown yarns.  A wonderful detail is the “T” at the internal apex of the zig-zag.  The weaver was highly skilled in resolving the corners as seen with the complex meeting of the spirals with the zig-zags.

Restoration:  Minor restoration to the sides and a few holes on the interior.
