Early New Mexican Box

Item #: 674
Origin: Spanish Colonial, New Mexican
Date: 18th to early 19th Century
Media: Pine
Dimensions: 23″ long, 10.5″ tall, 11″ wide, lid is slightly larger
Description: This box has great age and a wonderful golden patina that helps to express just that.  The hardware latch, more fanciful, was likely imported from Mexico, where as the simple, square lock system is more classic of the early New Mexican construct.  The lid on the underside has been cut to receive the top of the box boards, and this extra work required chipping out the form.  One can see this on the fifth photo below.
