Description: This powerful photograph of a Navajo family, visibly showing the emotional strain of the circumstance, is a study of not just the family, but also the bigger dilemma of the Navajo.  Their deadpan look at the camera speaks volumes not just about the immediate circumstance, but also the bigger picture of Native Americans in their homeland.  Not known as a part of the photo title nor described in the book The Enduring Navajo, where the photograph is published, the American flag on the wall behind the family was given to them because of the death of their son in a military situation. I know this only because a friend my mine’s father was present during the photo take.
