San Ildefonso Pueblo Water Jar or Olla

Item: 891

Origin: San Ildefonso Pueblo
Date: 1st quarter 20th C.

Media: Clay
Dimensions:  10″ tall,  12″ Diameter

Description: This jar has wonderful, full and curvaceous form.  The tall neck with flaring rim rises from an ample shoulder.   The colors and styles are all very indicative of San Ildefonso work.  The largest elements are what I call the dragonflies, at times appearing like airplanes with wings that vary from 3 to 4 layers.  The bottom is indented for carrying on the head.   The classic and distinctive narrow red band circles the jar just below the final ring of designs.

Restoration:  The jar has been black lighted and shows no signs of breakage or restoration.  However, there are smoothed areas around the rim that suggest some work was done some time ago.
